One of our favorite old-school Jersey City establishments is Neptune Bakery in Greenville. Located on the corner of JFK and Neptune, it is part bakery and part deli, a perfect go-to spot for a friendly cup of coffee and sandwich and/or and order of their famed filled custard cups. In operation since the 1980s, the current owners are Kevin and Janel Santos, two of the nicest people you are ever to meet. They took over the operation from Kevin’s father, whose father immigrated from Portugal, bringing his family’s original old-world recipe with him.

The most famous of those recipes is the custard cups, which are in constant high demand. Flavors include coconut, macaroon and the classic plain custard. They also sell plenty of other sweet stuff like sugar and sprinkle cookies, jelly sandwich cookies, eclairs, cream puffs and loaf cakes. Their team of bakers will also create a custom cake to your exact liking.

The most popular deli items include the Taylor Ham breakfast sandwiches and hoagies like a classic hot pastrami and Swiss, the Italian with prosciutto and mozzarella and the Roast Beef. There is no social media or website and yet through hard work and dedication, Neptune continues to thrive today in a city where new eateries seem to open on the daily.

Neptune Bakery is open 7 days a week from 5am to 8:30pm and is available to order online through the standard delivery apps.
